Different Places in the Mario Games

The Mario series is the most successful video game franchise of all time, having sold more than 200 million units since the character's debut in 1981's arcade classic Donkey Kong, reports the CNW group. Since then Mario has appeared in more than 200 video games. As the franchise has developed, so too has the lore and geography of the land in which Mario's adventures take place, primarily the Mushroom Kingdom. However Mario's quests have also taken him outside of the Mushroom Kingdom and even to outer space.
  1. Mushroom Kingdom

    • The Mushroom Kingdom is where the majority of the Super Mario games are set. It is a monarchy which is sometimes ruled over by a king, although the heir to the throne, Princess Peach, is generally portrayed as being at the top of monarchical hierarchy. Although Princess Peach, Mario and a few others who live in the kingdom are human, the majority of the populace are mushroom-like creatures, sometimes referred to as being toads because of their appearance being similar to a toadstool. The kingdom is centered around Princess Peach's castle.

    Dry Dry Desert

    • The desert in general has been a feature of many Mario games and is generally referred to as the Dry Dry Desert. Features of the Dry Dry Desert include quicksand, dunes, crumbling ancient ruins and a sometimes-vengeful sun that can either shoot fireballs at Mario or attempt to attack him directly as it does in "Super Mario Bros. 3." The same game also featured sandstorms which Mario had to utilize to find his way through the level. Pokeys are a common foe in the desert and are cactus-like creatures consisting of three to five spherical cacti on top of one another which Mario must destroy individually or find a way to jump over.

    Peach's Castle

    • Princess Peach's castle has featured in a number of Mario games but it was the primary location in "Super Mario 64." The large castle is surrounded by a moat. Inside the castle are four floors full of rooms which contain paintings. These paintings are actually portals to other locations within the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario jumps into the paintings to transport to these other lands to find Magic Stars which he needs to reach and defeat Bowser, the main antagonist in the Mario series.

    Isle Delfino

    • Isle Delfino is a dolphin-shaped holiday resort island within the Mushroom Kingdom which Mario, Toad and Peach visit in the game "Super Mario Sunshine." The island is primarily inhabited by Piantas, a species of people who slightly resemble humans but who have brightly colored skin and palm trees growing out of the top of their heads. The island has a central plaza, an active volcano, several beaches and an offshore theme park. Various locations on the island are connected by a series of underground tunnels.

    Other Locations

    • Mario's adventures have also taken him to various other locations, some of which don't have a set name. Water worlds are common features of the early Mario games, as are ice worlds which feature bad guys who can turn Mario to ice. Grassy lands, sometimes known as the Donut Plains, have featured in games including "Super Mario World" and "Super Mario Kart." Clouds play a big role in some early games, particularly "Super Mario Bros. 3," where Mario had to complete levels in the sky. Mario has also gone to outer space in the games "Super Mario World" and "Super Mario Galaxy."
