Sonic Games to Play

Sega introduced its mascot, Sonic the Hedgehog, in 1991. The video game developer intended for the speedy, blue hedgehog to rival Nintendo's leading character, Mario. Since his debut, Sonic has appeared in an expansive collection of games spanning numerous video game consoles. He has even appeared on Nintendo consoles, starring alongside his former rival.
  1. 2-D Platform Games

    • When Sonic debuted in the early 1990s, he starred in a series of side-scrolling platform games for the Sega Genesis. The original collection included games such as "Sonic the Hedgehog," "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" and "Sonic &Knuckles." The objective of these games was to guide Sonic through two-dimensional stages while saving his animal friends. Years later, between 2001 and 2004, Sonic would continue his two-dimensional adventures in the "Sonic Advance" series on Nintendo's Game Boy Advance.

    3-D Adventure Games

    • When Sega released the Sega Dreamcast console in 1998, Sonic's world expanded. In the "Sonic Adventure" series, the hedgehog explored three-dimensional worlds and met new friends, such as Big the Cat, and new rivals, such as Shadow the Hedgehog. Beyond the Sega Dreamcast, Sonic's three-dimensional games appeared on various non-Sega consoles, including the Nintendo GameCube, Sony PlayStation 2 and Microsoft's Xbox.

    Racing Games

    • Although Sonic's greatest asset is his speed, he's had plenty of racing competition. "Sonic Drift" for the Sega GameGear was one of the first racing games to feature characters from the "Sonic the Hedgehog" series as drivers; however, the game only appeared in Japan. Sega later released "Sonic Drift 2" for American audiences in 1995. Other racing games include the "Sonic Riders" series, which debuted in 2006, and the "Sonic Rivals" series for PlayStation Portable.

    Party and Puzzle Games

    • Not all games in the "Sonic the Hedgehog" franchise focus on speed. Games such as "Sonic Shuffle" and "Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine" placed more emphasis on luck and strategy.

    Fighting Games

    • In "Sonic the Fighters" and "Sonic Battle," players choose their favorite characters and duel in arenas. Although he is not the main character, Sonic is a hidden character in Nintendo's "Super Smash Bros. Brawl," a fighting game for the Wii.
