How to Upgrade Chaos Gems

"Sonic &Knuckles" is a platforming game released for the Sega Genesis in 1994 and is the fourth game of the Sonic series. Part of the "Sonic &Knuckles" gameplay involves collecting chaos emeralds, which are used to transform Sonic and Knuckles into Super Sonic and Super Knuckles. Players can upgrade chaos emeralds into super emeralds if they attach a copy of the game "Sonic 3" to the "Sonic &Knuckles" cartridge. Upgrading emeralds will allow players to turn into the even-more-powerful Hyper Sonic and Hyper Knuckles.

Instructions

- 1
  Collect all seven chaos emeralds in "Sonic 3" and save your game. Obtain emeralds by jumping into the large golden rings, which you will find throughout the game, and successfully completing a mini-game.

  Attach "Sonic 3" to "Sonic &Knuckles" and start a new game. Jump into the large golden rings, as you did in "Sonic 3," to enter the Hidden Palace zone. Here, all of the emeralds you obtained in "Sonic 3" are taken and replaced by super emeralds.

  Jump on top of a super emerald and successfully complete the mini-game to activate it. Note that this can only be done once per entry into the Hidden Palace zone.

  Continue going back into the Hidden Palace zone until all the super emeralds have been activated. Doing this will enable Sonic and Knuckles to enter hyper mode, which enables the two characters to run faster and jump higher than they could as Super Sonic or Super Knuckles.
