Jigglypuff
If it's your first time playing "Super Smash Bros.," you can work on unlocking Jigglypuff before Captain Falcon. Unlocking Jigglypuff simply requires completing the single player mode on any difficulty. Turn the difficulty down to Easy, and take your time getting through each fight. In all, there are ten stages you must pass before taking on the Master Hand. Defeat him to fight Jigglypuff, and fight her to unlock her as a character.
Captain Falcon
Having gotten some practice unlocking Jigglypuff, you should have a good idea of what works against your enemies. The key to unlocking Captain Falcon is repeating the act, but in under 20 minutes. Again, set the difficulty all the way down to Easy. On the lowest difficulty, your opponents are incredibly easy to defeat and often make errors, so powering through the stages should not be an issue. Defeat Captain Falcon to unlock him.
Luigi
"Super Smash Bros." features bonus stages in addition to the regular single-player mode. While these stages increase in difficulty, unlocking Luigi only requires that you finish the first one. However, since the first bonus stage is a simple fight, there is an additional requirement; you must complete it eight times, using each original character at least once. Bonus stages can be accessed through the main menu.
Ness
Ness is considered the most difficult to unlock of the four, but it still does not take too much skill to do. Again, you must complete the single player mode, but you must complete it on Normal difficulty. Additionally, you cannot use any more than three lives. Take it slow, and keep in mind the experience you've gained from unlocking the previous three characters. Defeat Ness to unlock him in the final stage.
