Fun Defender Games

Defender games are a particular video game genre that encompasses any kind of game that has you, the player, defending a location or item from a seemingly endless wave of enemies. This type of game, also commonly referred to as "tower defense" games, was very popular during the "Golden Age of Video Games" in the early 1980s. With services like Xbox LIVE and electronic devices like the iPhone making "casual" gaming popular again, these types of video games are starting to make a re-emergence in the marketplace.
  1. Missile Command

    • "Missile Command" is one of the earliest forms of defender game, having first been released in the arcades in 1980. The game has you in control of a crosshair that appears on the screen, and the goal is to fire lasers that will extend to where your crosshairs are located and detonate incoming missiles. The ultimate goal of the game is to prevent any of the missiles from reaching your base on the planet's surface through carefully placed and carefully timed shots. The title eventually made its way to the Atari 2600, Atari 5200, Atari Jaguar, PlayStation, Xbox LIVE and the iPod App Store.

    Plants vs. Zombies

    • "Plants vs. Zombies" for Xbox LIVE, PlayStation Network, Windows, Mac, Nintendo DS and iPod/iPad, is an updated take on the classic defender game. "Plants vs. Zombies" differs from most modern games in that you don't play as any particular character. Instead you are tasked with a simple challenge: build defenses to prevent the horde of zombies from reaching the other side of your screen. Unlike other games, which have you dispatching zombies with powerful manmade weapons, "Plants vs. Zombies" gives you weapons that include fire-spitting flowers and large acorns that can bring down some of the tougher zombies in the game.

South Park Let's Go Tower Defense Play

    • Released in 2009 on Xbox LIVE, "South Park Let's Go Tower Defense Play" takes the concept of a classic tower defense title and adds the humor of the South Park television series. Before each level you can select which of the four main characters you want to play as: Kyle, Stan, Cartman or Kenny. Once you have your character, you are given time to place snowball cannons, ice barricades and other defensive measures on the map before you ward off wave after wave of enemies. During this time you maintain control of your character, allowing you to run across the map and pelt enemies with additional snowballs or unleash your character's special attack.

    Rampart

    • "Rampart" separates itself from the other games in that it demands that you defend several targets at one time from an advancing army. You do this by placing wall fortifications in a style similar to "Tetris," with point bonuses being added to your total score for using the fewest pieces possible. Once your pieces are in place you must strategically place your cannons before the enemy arrives. Once they do, you aim and fire. After you've defeated all the enemies on the screen, or a certain number of turns has passed, you either move on to the next stage of must begin anew.
