How to Make Mugen Games

Mugen games are two dimensional games developed with the MUGEN software. MUGEN is a programming software developed by Elecbyte and was originally released in 1999. MUGEN software was used to create many popular fighter games like Capcom's Street Fighter and SNK's King of Fighters. MUGEN can now be downloaded by anyone so that people can make their own MUGEN games. Making your own MUGEN game can be broken down into some simple steps that nearly anyone can follow.

Instructions

    • 1

Download the MUGEN software from the Softonic developers' site. When prompted to save or open the file, choose the save option and set the directory to somewhere easy to remember.

    • 2

Install the MUGEN software from the file you downloaded. Specify a location for the exe file to be saved so that you can access the file later.

    • 3

Determine which characters you would like to have in your game. There are a number of sites you can get MUGEN formatted characters from that come in easy to use files. Move the selected character files into the "Chars" folder located in your MUGEN folder

    • 4

Go into the "data" folder and open the "select.def" file. Locate the line that reads ";insert your characters below" and add the names of the character folders.

    • 5

Add your custom stages in a similar fashion. Move the stages you wish to use into the stages folder located in your MUGEN folder. Open the "select.def" folder and locate the line that reads "[ExtraStages]." Under this put the name of the folder the stage is located in followed by a "/" and the exact name of the .def file.

    • 6

Add music to your game. Place the MP3 formatted music file that you wish to use in your "Sound" folder. Go to the folder containing the stage .def file that you wish to add music to. Locate the line that reads "[Music]". Directly under this is the line ";Put a filename for a MOD, MP3 or MIDI here, or just leave it." Delete this line and put the folder name and file name for the song you wish to use here.
