Atari Battlezone Tips

The game "Battlezone" for the Atari 2600 was initially released in 1980. The game drops players off in a randomly generated battlefield on which a number of enemies are all working together to destroy the newcomer. Your tank is more powerful than some of the basics, but it relies on your speed and skill at the helm to survive.
  1. Identify Sounds

    • The game features a number of sounds, and knowing their differences can help you respond to them. Each time an enemy appears on the screen, there's a specific warning tone. The sounds of fired projectiles -- your own bullets, those of the enemies and missiles -- are important identifiers to letting you know how to respond. When you bump into something, you'll hear another special sound. The saucer also makes an specific sound, which shouldn't come across as a threat. Finally, for your own enjoyment, there is the sound of destruction.

    45 Degree Angles

    • The fastest way to get out of the way of a bullet may seem contrary to intuition. Turn the tank to 45 degrees, either to the left or right, and then move yourself forward or backward to get out of the way. When the shot passes you, turn back and return fire. Make sure you have the enemy in your sights, as you can fire only one shot at a time.

    One At a Time

    • The game handles only one thing at a time, which can work to your advantage or your disadvantage. Both you and your foes can fire only one shot at a time, so when they have missed you because of your slick driving, that is the time to retaliate. The game also gives you only one enemy at a time to deal with, so if a missile appears on your screen, the tanks temporarily disappear. Keep moving after killing an enemy to spot the next.

    Saucers

    • Saucers exist to block your shots, and otherwise pose little threat. They will do a kamikaze run into the path of your own shots to defend one of your enemy tanks. Don't seek them out specifically, because you may end up missing the enemy tank hunting you. However, if you have one lined up and have an opportunity, shoot at it. The saucer gives you a lot of points when destroyed.

    Super Tanks

    • Super tanks are fast-moving, heavily armed, wedge-shaped enemies that pose more of a threat than regular tanks. They can outrun you in a chase and seem to enjoy sniping you in the back. As with regular tanks, super tanks fire only standard projectiles one at a time. Avoid their shots, and then take them out.

    Cruise Missiles

    • Occasionally, missiles will appear on screen targeting you. They appear out of nowhere, and the first ones you see will come straight for you. Shoot them out of the air, and you will be fine. Later missiles will zig-zag across the play field and attack you, but you can avoid them by moving into the zig and letting them zag past you.

    Helicopters

    • Helicopters are the toughest enemies to beat, because they swoop onto the battlefield, and then fire projectiles at you before disappearing into the sky again. Avoid a projectile by turning just enough that it misses you, and then turn back to fire on the helicopter that fired on you before it swoops back into the sky.
