Choosing a Character
"Gauntlet II" features four playable characters: the Elf, Valkyrie, Warrior and Wizard. Each character is balanced differently, with its own advantages and disadvantages. While the Elf moves and attacks quickly, his attacks aren't very powerful. Meanwhile, the Warrior is much slower and has weak magic, but his physical attack is strongest. The Wizard features the least physical strength and average speed, he has the most powerful magic. Lastly, the Valkyrie features all-around average stats, making her the most balanced character. Play with each character multiple times to figure out which best suits your play style.
Monsters and Generators
The monsters in "Gauntlet II" are supplied by various generators within each level. You can clear the screen of monsters, but if a generator is on-screen, it will continue to make them. Destroy any generators you find as soon as you can to minimize the monsters you'll have to fight. If you get overrun, simply walk away until the generator is no longer in sight and kill all on-screen monsters before attempting it again.
Getting a High Score
"Gauntlet II" features a scoring system with set values for specific events. Collecting a key gives you 100 points, while treasures get anywhere from 100 to 500 points. Monsters have a set point reward based on their type and generators are worth twice as much as the monsters they create. Killing Death can land you up to 6,000 points, but you can kill him only with a magic potion or by teleporting to the same spot he is.
Game Guides and Walk-throughs
With more than 100 mazes, "Gauntlet II" can get confusing. Websites like IGN and Game Spot feature unofficial walk-throughs that can help you figure out some of the more difficult puzzles. If you get lost in a maze, look at a map of the level, also available online.
Cheats
If you stand still long enough, the level's doors will open and all of the walls will turn into exits. While it may sound like an easy escape, you lose up to 36 health points when the doors disappear and around 325 health points for the walls. Alternately, players with a Game Genie cheating device can input multiple "Gauntlet II" codes on the NES version. Game Genie codes include invincibility, extra "super-shots," and codes to strengthen or weaken some of the game's power-ups.
