Instructions
Insert one of the following games into the Sega Genesis: "Sonic 2," "Sonic 3," "Sonic and Knuckles," or "Sonic 4." The player can become Super Sonic in any of these games.
Collect all of the Chaos Emeralds. All of the games listed above have seven Chaos Emeralds, which are distributed in different stages of the game. In these original Sonic games, the Chaos Emeralds are not rewards for completing a stage, but are special items that can appear anywhere in the level. Often, Chaos Emeralds are located in Special Stages. The Emeralds appear as large physical jewels in a variety of colors.
Collect 50 rings or more. Rings are commonly found in the game, and Sonic will collect rings continually unless he runs into an enemy, which will cause him to drop the rings.
Press the "jump" button twice. Sonic will turn yellow, and will become Super Sonic. Sonic can now run much faster, fly, and is not harmed by running into enemies. Super Sonic can still be killed by "sudden death" hazards, such as falling or being crushed. Maintaining the Super Sonic state comes at a cost, however: being Super Sonic drains your supply of rings, at a rate of one per second. When the supply of rings reaches zero, Sonic turns back to normal.
