Mario World Tips & Tricks

In 1991, Nintendo released "Super Mario World" for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Originally, Nintendo offered the game in a package alongside the console; however, throughout the years, the company re-released "Super Mario World" for other Nintendo consoles like the Game Boy Advance. It is one of the highest selling video games in history. While the 16-bit game has simplistic controls, it features many hidden secrets.
  1. Revisit Castles

    • If you want to a replay a cleared castle or fortress, position Mario over the location on the map and press the "L" and "R" buttons simultaneously. This will allow you to reaccess the level.

    Exit Level

    • Once you have started a level that you previously cleared, it is not too late to quit. Press "Start" and "Select" to return to the map.

    Special Music

    • Leave Mario standing on the Special World map for two to five minutes. The game will play a steel-drum version of the original "Super Mario Brothers" theme song.

    Two Items

    • If Mario is between two items that occupy the same space, hold the "X" or "Y" button. This trick allows him to carry both items at once.

    Item Conversion

    • If you carry certain items through the goalposts at the end of each level, the game will reward you. For example, carrying a key or a baby Yoshi through the goal will earn you a 1-Up. This trick also works if you bring multiple items through the goalpost, but you will receive two rewards instead of one.

    Yoshi Abilities

    • "Super Mario World" is the first game in the series that features Mario riding on Yoshi. Once you have mounted Yoshi, eating different shells will have various effects on your powers. By eating a red shell, Yoshi gains the ability to spit a fireball. Yoshi will grow wings if he consumes a blue shell. Yellow shells cause Yoshi to kick up sand whenever he lands from jumps. Green shells will not grant any special abilities.

After jumping on a P-switch, use Yoshi to eat the remains. He will spit out a new P-switch. This trick allows you use the same item multiple times.

You can also use Yoshi to slide up hills. To perform this trick, begin climbing a hill while pressing diagonally down and left or right.
