Old Arcade Games

Long before Sony Playstation and Microsoft Xbox, video games were coin-operated and played in arcades. Kids would play these arcade games in places such as restaurants and movie theaters before video game consoles for the home were invented. Though the old games were much simpler to play and didn't have the same quality graphics as the games of today, they still provided hours of enjoyment and entertainment.
  1. Pac-Man

    • Released in 1980, Pac-Man is an old maze game with newer versions still played today. The object of the game is to guide the game's character, Pac-Man, through a maze as he is being chased by four ghosts. If Pac-Man eats a power pellet, he can eat the ghosts. But if you hit a ghost without the pellet, you lose a life. Throughout the game, fruits appear such as lemons, oranges and cherries--giving you power such as temporary invincibility or ability to move faster when you maneuver Pac-Man to eat the appropriate fruit. When Pac-Man eats all of the pellets in the maze, you continue to a more difficult level, with 256 levels in all.

    Centipede

    • Centipede was released in 1980 by Atari and is played by moving a trackball and shooting mushrooms and all the segments of a centipede that winds its way down to the bottom of the screen. The object of the game is to destroy the mushrooms to get to the centipede. The centipede moves faster with the presence of more mushrooms. When you shoot all the segments, you move on to the next level. As you move through each level, more mushrooms appear, the centipede moves faster and swarms of insects appear that you'll have to shoot before they get to you.

    Space Invaders

    • Designed in Japan in 1978 and released by Atari in 1980, Space Invaders was the first arcade game adapted for Atari's home system. This simple game is played by destroying aliens that appear in rows by moving an object at the bottom of the screen from left to right and clicking a button to shoot bullets from the moving object. However, you also have to avoid being hit by bullets coming down from each of the rows of "invaders.". The object of the game is to move to advance to the next level by finishing off all the aliens on the screen before the first row reaches you or before you're hit by a bullet and lose your last life.

    Tron

    • Tron was a game released by Disney in 1982 and was based on the movie by the same name. The game is actually comprised of four individual games organized into 12 difficulty levels. The four games, with you playing as the character, Tron, are I/O Tower, MCP Cone, Battle Tanks and Light Cycles. In I/O Tower, you must destroy "Grid Bugs" using Tron's disc. In MCP Cone, you must clear a wall of bricks in front of the Master Control Program cone so that Tron can enter the cone. Battle Tanks is a game in which Tron's tank is guided through a maze while destroying tanks. Finally, in Light Cycles, you have to surround the computer's yellow cycles with Tron's blue cycle without allowing his cycles to run into the walls.
