Fun Video Games to Play

The video game industry is one that continues to grow throughout the years. As of 2010, 65 percent of the households in the U.S. have video gaming systems. As noted on the website Online Education, the average age of gamers is 32, with women making up 40 percent of the gaming population. While many games are first-person shooters or survival horror, others rely on simple fun plots for gameplay, including games in Nintendo's "Mario" franchise, which is the most successful gaming franchise in history.
  1. Little Big Planet

    • "Little Big Planet" was hailed as the best game of 2008 by numerous gaming and technology publications, including the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences. With a score of 9.5 out of 10 from IGN gaming website editors, "Little Big Planet" offers innovative gameplay for gamers of all ages.

In "Little Big Planet," available for the PlayStation 3, players take on a sock person. The sock person wanders through Little Big Planet trying to catch The Collector, who is stealing from other Little Big Planet citizens and not sharing. It's up to the sock person to right the wrongs of The Collector and pick up some nice prizes along the way. In addition to the main story mode, the game also features create mode, in which users can design their own levels, and community mode, in which players can play levels created by other players.

Super Mario Galaxy/Super Mario Galaxy 2

    • The "Mario" franchise offers a plethora of fun titles for gamers, but two of the best-received Mario games are "Super Mario Galaxy" and "Super Mario Galaxy 2." GameSpot editors rank the original "Super Mario Galaxy" at 9.5 out of 10, while the sequel receives a 10. Like many other "Mario" games, these games involve rescuing Princess Peach from peril. Mario must get help from a tiny star creature known as a luma in order to fight through multiple galaxies in order to find Peach. These games, available for the Nintendo Wii, feature single-player and multiplayer modes.

    Guitar Hero/Rock Band

    • "Guitar Hero" kick-started a new era in gaming by giving players a more hands-on approach to gaming. The game also inspired the creation of another franchise known as "Rock Band." Where "Guitar Hero" sticks to guitar playing, "Rock Band" gets the whole family in on the action, with players able to take up positions on the guitar or drums, or as lead vocalist.

Both game franchises have a number of sequels. "Guitar Hero" features sequels based on specific artists such as Van Halen and Metallica, as well as genre-based games like "Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock" and "Guitar Hero Encore Rocks the '80s." In a similar vein, gamers can also pick up "DJ Hero" and "Band Hero." With "Rock Band," players can choose from titles such as "The Beatles Rock Band," "Lego Rock Band" and "Green Day Rock Band." These games are available for the PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii and Xbox 360.
