How to Retexture Super Mario 64

The Nintendo 64 console boasted some of the best games ever made. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Goldeneye 007 and Super Mario 64 were and are incredible examples of both storyline and mesmerizing visual artistry. While still a treat to play today, the graphics and textures of the games have become noticeably dated. Emulators are programs which allow you to play these classic games on your computer, and they have breathed new life into the genre. With a few simple procedures you can doctor the textures of your favorite N64 games and upgrade them to high-resolution for a truly captivating gaming experience.

Instructions

  1. Instructions

    • 1

Download and install the Project 64 emulator. It can be found by following the link in the 'Resource' section below (all other links are also located here). Remember where you save the file.

    • 2

Download the RiceVideo plugin. The plugin will download as a zipped '.RAR' file. Find the Project 64 main folder (where Project64.exe is), and find the 'Plugin' folder. Unzip and extract the RiceVideo file here.

    • 3

Download the file called 'BMGlib.dll.' Save this file in Project 64 main folder.

    • 4

Download the texture pack of your choice. Unzip and extract the files in the Plugin folder. If there is a 'hires_texture' sub-folder, extract them there.

    • 5

Ensure all the files are in the right place and start the emulator. Go to Options > Settings, and choose the RiceVideo plugin as the Video plugin.

    • 6

Go to Options > Configure Graphics Plugin. Click the Texture Filters tab and check the option 'Load hi-res textures if available.'

    • 7

Once finished, load the ROM (game) which corresponds to your texture pack -- in this case Super Mario 64. You should now be able to play in high resolution or with custom textures.
