List of Super Mario Games

Launched in 1985, Nintendo's Super Mario franchise is the world's best-selling video game series, according to IGN.com, with worldwide sales exceeding 200 million games. With few exceptions, Super Mario games are based on variations of the same, simple plot: Mario, a plumber, must rescue Princess Peach, ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, from a malevolent turtle-dragon named Bowser.
  1. Nintendo Entertainment System

    • From 1985 to 1991, Nintendo released three side-scrolling Super Mario games on the Nintendo Entertainment System. The first, Super Mario Bros., requires Mario to save Peach from Bowser by battling enemies in the Mushroom Kingdom's eight worlds.

Nintendo deviated from the original storyline in Super Mario Bros. 2, which takes place in Mario's dreams. The sequel features a different set of enemies--for one, a frog named Wart replaces Bowser as the main enemy. Players can use one of four characters: Mario, Luigi, Toad or Princess Toadstool.

Super Mario Bros. 3 returns to the original game's basic plot but with additional enemies and power-ups.

    Super Nintendo Entertainment System

    • Nintendo released the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991 along with Super Mario World, which marked the first appearance of Mario's dinosaur sidekick, Yoshi.

In the sequel, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, players use Yoshi to carry an infant Mario safely to the end.

A year after Super Mario World, Nintendo released Super Mario Kart, a racing game with courses based on worlds from the previous games.

    Nintendo 64

    • One of the first releases for the Nintendo 64 console in 1996 was Super Mario 64, according to IGN.com. Mario recovers the stars--up to 105--Bowser stole from Peach's castle. Players access the game's levels by jumping into paintings hanging on the walls of the castle.

    Nintendo GameCube

    • Six years after Super Mario 64, Nintendo released Super Mario Sunshine for the GameCube console in 2002. In this game, Bowser Jr., disguised as Shadow Mario, kidnaps Peach while she and Mario are vacationing on Isle Delfino. In the process. Bowser's son vandalizes the island and displaces its 120 guardian Shine Sprites. Framed for the crime, Mario must clean up the island with a water-spraying contraption and retrieve Peach and the Sprites.

    Nintendo Wii

    • Released in November 2009, the New Super Mario Brothers returns to the side-scrolling play of the original. Yet the game becomes the first in the Super Mario series to allow multiple players--up to four--to play simultaneously.

In the other two Super Mario games for the Wii, Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2, Mario must rescue Peach from Bowser, this time to outer space. Like Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine, both are 3-D games.
