How to Play Sonic the Hedgehog on an Emulator

Sonic the Hedgehog, one of video gaming's most enduring characters, was first introduced to players in 1991 via the Sega Genesis. The 8-bit game was like nothing before ever seen, filled with sound and movement. Sonic himself was capable of new movements that set him apart from other gaming heroes. Play "Sonic the Hedgehog" on an emulator to re-enjoy this classic console game.

Instructions

    • 1

Get a gaming controller with a USB connection. Gaming controllers are available at large retail outlets, game stores and a wide variety of online retailers. Choose a gaming controller that offers a similar button configuration to the traditional Sega Genesis, which contained three buttons in addition to the joystick. Classic Genesis controllers made for the computer are available for purchase.

    • 2

Download a Sega Genesis emulator online (see Resources for an example emulator).

    • 3

Install the emulator on the computer's hard drive. If the program does not automatically create a folder, designate a new folder for the emulator and related files.

    • 4

Download the "Sonic the Hedgehog" ROM, which is a playable game file designed especially to work with emulator software. Save the ROM to the folder where the emulator is stored.

    • 5

Plug the gaming controller into the computer and download the software. Some software programs may install the controller automatically; if yours does not, simply install the software manually.

    • 6

Run the emulator program. To do this, go to "File," select "Open ROM" (or the equivalent command), and select "Sonic the Hedgehog."

    • 7

Go to the Tools or Options menu, and search for the "Controller" or "Devices" option. Configure the emulator to recognize the attached gaming controller. Begin playing the game.
