Sega Genesis Space Games

The SEGA Genesis, known as the SEGA Mega Drive in Europe and Japan, was a 16-bit console and, for a while, the chief competitor to Nintendo&'s Super Nintendo Entertainment System. In its decade-plus lifespan, the Genesis amassed a library of over 900 titles, including several space shooters that reach across many different game types.
  1. Battle Squadron

    • Battle Squadron from Cope-Com and Electronic Arts was a top-down space shooter in which the player took control of a nameless fighter craft. While early missions had players blasting their way through cities and enemy compounds, later missions had you fighting off giant space monsters and enemy battleships. There is a variety of powers and abilities to use to your advantage as you progress through the game, before eventually facing off against the Barrax Nova Cruiser, the game&'s end boss.

    Galaxy Force II

    • Another in the long line of down-rail shooters on the Genesis, Galaxy Force plays very similarly to another of SEGA&'s titles, After Burner. In Galaxy Force, you pilot a single intergalactic fighter as you fight off waves of enemy fighters. There are six stages spread across five planets, meaning that while players can pop the game in and have a quick round or two, there is more than enough to keep a diehard busy for a few hours.

    Zero Wing

    • Zero Wing is much more than a simple side-scrolling space shooter; it is an Internet icon. In Zero Wing, your goal is to defeat your enemies by using one of the four available weapon power-ups. While the game itself is a fairly standard 2D side-scrolling space shooter in the vein of games like R-Type, the game received much notoriety for its horrendous translation from Japanese to English which allowed phrases like "all your base are belong to us" to become staples of Internet culture.
