How to Display an Xbox on a Laptop

If you're in a dorm or a small room and are short on space, you may want to hook up your favorite game console, such as Microsoft's Xbox, to your laptop screen to conserve some room instead of hooking it up to a separate TV. With a standard video capture card available at most retail electronics stores, you can play your favorite Xbox games right on your laptop screen.

Things You'll Need

  • Video capture card with A/V input and software
  • Laptop
  • Xbox with A/V cables

Instructions

Insert your video capture card into the necessary slot on your laptop. Some capture cards go into the PCI slot, while others use a USB slot or the firewire port. Consult your specific capture card's manual for instructions on which port to use.

    • 2

Install and run the video capture card's software. The software should come on a disc with the video capture card and on-screen instructions should pop up when you place it into your computer's CD/DVD drive.

    • 3

Connect the video/audio output on the Xbox using the attached A/V cables to the audio/video input of the capture card. The cables should be standard RCA cables with yellow, red, and white plastic heads. When connecting them to the capture card, simply match up the color of the cable's head with the color of the ring around the input.

Power on the Xbox. It should begin streaming its video signal to the video capture card and subsequently to your laptop screen.
