How to Make an Arrow of Light Arrow

The Arrow of Light is the highest award a Cub Scout can earn. Presented when the scout is a Webelos, the award combines the skills and hard work the boy has mastered during his Cub Scout years. Present a special pack arrow to the award recipient at a pack meeting or award ceremony to round out this distinguished honor. Create arrows in the pack colors and decorate them with reminders of the boy's accomplishments.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and cut a 1/4-inch dowel rod down to an 18-inch length with a hand saw. Cut a 1/4-inch deep notch in one end of the dowel rod with the saw to create the arrow shaft.

    • 2

Paint the arrow shaft if desired. Choose blue and gold Cub Scout colors, a color that holds importance to the pack or den, or paint it as a career arrow. Career arrows are marked with different-colored bands that signify achievements the recipient has accomplished as a Cub Scout. Use enamel-based paint and cover the bands with a clear sealant.

    • 3

Squeeze a bead of heavy-duty glue in the notch at the end of the arrow. Slide a stone arrowhead into the notch and allow the glue to dry.

    • 4

Coat the arrowhead where it is attached to the dowel (as well as one-half inch of dowel) with glue. Wrap heavy twine or leather lacing around the arrowhead and dowel, pressing the lacing into the glue. The lacing camouflages the joint between the shaft and the arrow, as well as strengthening it.

    • 5

Cut the top and bottom off of two feathers so each feather is 3 inches long. Split the feathers in half lengthwise by cutting through the center of the quill with a utility knife. Trim the feathers so they are all shaped the same.

    • 6

Spread a bead of glue along the quill-side of one of the feathers. Glue the feather to the arrow shaft one inch from the end. (The arrowhead is at one end of the shaft and the feathers are at the other.) Glue two more of the feathers around the end of the shaft, spacing them at an equal distance from one another.
