How to Clean Game Cartridges

If you have old NES, Sega, Game Boy or any other classic game cartridges, chances are they've collected dirt and dust over the years. This dirt build-up affects the cartridges' performance and playability. Because the game cartridges hold up fairly well, cleaning usually is all that's needed to restore the games to their original condition. Use isopropyl alcohol for its quick-drying properties and ability to break down sticky residue.

Instructions

Mix equal parts isopropyl alcohol and water in a small container. Dip a cotton swab into the alcohol solution, squeezing out any excess.

Clean the contacts on the bottom of the cartridge with the cotton swab. Clean the metal and the plastic on the inside, using new swabs until they come out clean.

    • 3

Dampen a cloth with warm water and 1/4 tsp. dish soap. Wipe the outside of the cartridge with the cloth to remove any dirt or residue. Use the alcohol solution to remove glue from stickers or labels. Rinse the cartridge with a clean, damp cloth.

Dry the outside of the cartridge with a clean cloth. Allow the contacts to dry for 10 to 15 minutes before playing.
