How to Clean Nintendo Nes Games

The Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) was the most popular gaming system in the world in its time and pretty much started the video game industry as we know it. However, there was one serious flaw in those old cartridge-based games; they were very susceptible to dust, and when they got dusty, they had a tendency to stop working. Luckily, cleaning an NES cartridge is not a difficult task.

Instructions

    • 1

Dip a cotton swab in the window cleaner solution. It should be about 50 percent isopropyl alcohol and 50 percent water. Rub the cotton swab firmly across the metal contacts on the bottom of the dusty cartridge.

    • 2

Repeat the process of rubbing cotton swabs dipped in window cleaner solution across the contacts. Do this until the cotton swab is clean when you remove it.

    • 3

Rub a dry cotton swab along the contacts to remove any excess liquid inside. Set the cartridge aside for at least one hour to allow it time to dry.

    • 4

Insert the game into your NES and turn on the power. If the game does not work, take it back out and re-insert it two or three times to make sure the cartridge is truly clean. If the game still does not work, it is likely that either your Nintendo console itself needs to be cleaned or it is broken. Try other games to determine if the problem lies with the cartridge or the console.
