History
Released on PC, Playstation, Dreamcast and Game Boy Color "Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX" hit store shelves October 30, 2000, promoting the extreme sports culture becoming popular with video games. Developed by Z-Axis, famed BMX champion Dave Mirra was the face of this first-of-a-kind 3D video game.
ATV video games took off on February 7, 2001, after Rainbow Studios developed "ATV Offroad Fury" for PlayStation 2. For the first time, gamers had the option to race digital ATVs through cross-country enduro, Maxxis Grand Nationals, freestyle stunt and stadium Supercross, all from a single menu. This video game was the first in a four-game franchise.
Function
Video games offer a look into what it could be like to race ATVs, backflip high in the air on a bike, play as a favorite NBA player or act as a covert operative in a hostile territory. Gaming is a form of entertainment that takes us to places we may not ever be able to go in real life. ATV and BMX video games center on extreme activity. Not all of us want to risk the potential injury of flying over a 90-foot gap on an ATV or racing through a stunt course on a BMX.
Identification
Gamers can be anyone and everyone. According to a 2009 report from the Entertainment Software Association titled "Essential Facts About the Video Game Industry," 26 percent of gamers are 50 years of age or older, 49 percent are 18 to 49 and 25 percent are under 18 years old. Forty percent of the 18-plus game-playing population is female.
Benefits
ATV enthusiasts can turn to ATV video games as a way to learn trick names, experience replicated racetracks and ride without risk of injury. The same is true for BMX games. Weather does not always permit a person to get outside and ride a BMX bike or an ATV, so video games offer another avenue to take part in the hobby.
Expert Insight
ATV games are much like dirt bike titles as they each offer the same type of tricks, big air and a more fast-paced experience. BMX games are technical. Pedal power means hitting lines perfectly, choosing tricks wisely and understanding course features to better use available time.
