Classic Atari 2600 Games

The Atari 2600 gaming console was one of the first popular platforms for video games. Players use a joystick and button to navigate through different games available for the Atari 2600 system. First released in 1977, the Atari 2600 predated the original Nintendo Entertainment System console and was originally sold only at select retailers. The games available for the Atari 2600 vary, though some gained more fame than others.
  1. "Pac-Man"

    • "Pac-Man" is the best-selling Atari game. "Pac-Man" features a small, circular protagonist who devours portions of a maze while avoiding enemies and trying to accumulate points. To avoid being destroyed by enemies, players could eat special items that would make them invincible. Once a maze has been cleared of all obstacles, players advance to the next stage.

    "Pitfall!"

    • Released in 1982, Pitfall! is an adventure game that challenges players to scroll through different levels while dealing with opponents and dangerous scenery. Players compete as Harry, who is trying to find 32 total treasures while racing against the clock. "Pitfall!" sequels were released after the original became popular.

    "River Raid"

    • In "River Raid," which came out for the Atari 2600 in 1982, players climb in a plane and shoot at enemies while scrolling across the screen. Players can alter the speed of their plane, and they must ensure their planes have enough fuel to get through different levels in the game.

    "Space Invaders"

    • "Space Invaders" was released for the Atari 2600 in 1980. Players must protect their spacecraft from enemies while eliminating opponents that lurk above. Structures are placed in front of players to partially protect them from the opponent's advances.

    "Star Fox"

    • "Star Fox" debuted in 1983 for the Atari 2600, and it takes place in the distant future. Players must fight off enemies while attempting to save an abandoned load of energy crystals that are very powerful.

    "Adventure"

    • The Atari 2600 game "Adventure" challenges players to navigate through paths and avoid enemies to reach the end. Players can use weapons and items to combat enemy dragons. "Adventure" was released in 1979.
