How to Rope Swing in Tomb Raider 4

The "Tomb Raider" series combined the very popular action-archaeology genre with something many gamers can appreciate: a strong and sexy female lead character. Lara Croft, the titular raider, was not only a smart and cultured woman but also fast, agile and capable of defending herself, thanks to a handful of weapons and combat training. In "Tomb Raider 4," one of the most complicated but helpful added elements was the ability to swing and climb ropes--now useful for puzzles and quick getaways, if you can master it.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin the game and start playing through level one: Ankor Wat. This level acts as a tutorial for how to play and move around, as well as introducing new features. As a result, it is not extremely challenging, provided you follow the directions.

    • 2

Look for the secret golden skulls littered throughout the level. There are eight to collect in all, and you will see the first one after speaking with Werner, your mentor, hidden on a ledge behind him. Missing a secret does not prevent you from completing the game or level.

    • 3

Play through the level until you reach the crossroads: Werner will point to two doors, indicating that one is the Path of the Virtuous and the other the Path of the Heretical. If you have collected all eight secrets, he will open the latter path; he will open the former path if you miss any secrets.

    • 4

Continue down the path chosen by Werner until you reach a room with a rope in the center. You will reach this room regardless of whether you are on the Path of the Virtuous or of the Heretical--although the Heretical version of the room is brighter.

    • 5

Take a running jump toward the rope after Werner directs you to do so. While you are in the air, press and hold the action button for your version of the game. Lara will grab the rope and won't let go until you release the action button.

    • 6

Press and hold the sprint button, while still attached, to begin swinging. You can speed up the swinging by climbing to the top of the rope, but always slide down to the bottom before you try to jump off.

    • 7

Change the camera angle to better view the ledge you're aiming to reach, but don't lose momentum on your swing.

    • 8

Wait until Lara is on the upswing, just before the vine reaches its highest point. Release the action button and press the jump button to launch Lara to the next rope.

    • 9

Practice rope swinging a few times before you move on. You will need to perform this technique several times throughout the game.
