RTS Games for the XBox

Real-time strategy (RTS) games make you wear the general's hat as you command small squadrons or full armies against massive hosts of enemies. Although traditional RTS games take a top-down perspective and involve resource harvesting, construction and unit training, modern RTS games can take a variety of formats. While RTS games have typically made their home on PCs due to the ease of pointing and clicking with a mouse, you can now find many console RTS games. RTS games on the original Xbox laid the groundwork for Xbox 360 games like "Halo Wars," and you can still enjoy these classics thanks to the console's backward compatibility.
  1. "Full Spectrum Warrior"

    • "Full Spectrum Warrior" breaks from the traditional RTS format and incorporates elements of squad-based shooters and third-person action games. You'll control multiple squadrons of U.S. soldiers locked in urban combat in a fictional Middle Eastern locale. This hybrid of genres gives you an over-the-shoulder camera view like a third-party action game but has you issuing commands, navigating through fog of war and making snap decisions like an RTS game. In addition to the single-player campaign mode, you can access online co-op to fight alongside a friend on Xbox Live.

    "Kingdom Under Fire: The Crusaders"

    • "Kingdom Under Fire: The Crusaders" takes place in a medieval fantasy setting where you'll battle your way through four campaigns. Two campaigns focus on the heroic human faction, while the other two let you play as the evil Dark Faction. Battles feature an epic sense of scale as you'll sometimes see up to 200 troops on the field at once, and your hero character will have to face down dozens of enemies. While engaged in actual combat, the game plays more like a standard action game. You'll button-mash to perform combos and call on the aid of your nearby troops. You'll enter the RTS portion of the battle when you have a chance to pull your hero away from combat. Give orders to your squadrons of archers, paladins and scouts to develop a strategic advantage before plunging your hero character back into the fray.

    "Commandos 2: Men Of Courage"

    • In "Commandos 2: Men Of Courage," you'll be placed in an early World War II setting and control a small squadron of elite soldiers battling against the Third Reich. You'll control a range of troop types, such as elite green berets who can stealthily kill guards and steal their uniforms. Demolitions experts can take out bridges to limit enemy supply routes. Each of the game's 12 main missions features multiple branching paths so you can choose how you complete the main objective based on the skills of your team.
