Swords
Link starts out "The Legend of Zelda" with a wooden sword, a basic weapon that is used to damage and knock back enemies. Later in the game, Link will find the white sword and magical sword, upgraded weapons that deal additional damage. Starting with 1992's "The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past," Link could perform a powerful spin attack. The player presses and holds the attack button to charge it, then releases the button to unleash the attack.
Boomerangs
The wooden boomerang can be thrown by Link to damage or stun enemies. The boomerang deals less damage than the sword, so multiple hits may be required to defeat an enemy. The boomerang can also be thrown to collect items, such as rupees and heart containers, or trigger switches. The magical boomerang travels a greater distance than the wooden boomerang.
Bow and Arrows
Link's bow is used with wooden or silver arrows to deal ranged attacks. In "The Legend of Zelda," each arrow fired costs Link one rupee. Some enemies can only be destroyed using the bow, including Link's nemesis, Ganon. Silver arrows must be used to finish off Ganon in the final battle after you've weakened him with your sword.
Bombs
Link can find or buy bombs throughout his quest. Each bomb he picks up is actually four bombs. Bombs are effective for killing enemies and clearing obstacles from Link's path. Well-placed bombs can reveal secret areas of the map. Walls that appear to be cracked or are a different color from the surrounding area usually conceal hidden passageways.
Magic Wand
Link obtains the magic wand in level 6 of "The Legend of Zelda." This wand fires a beam that causes damage to enemies. The magic wand's power can be increased by combining it with magic books found throughout the dungeons.
