How to Play NES on a USB Flash Drive

The Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) was host to some of the best-loved games of the so-called "Golden Age of Home Gaming." The system made arcade-style gaming available to home users, and its system design and graphical style have become iconic. Today, the technology behind the NES no longer requires a big gray box plugged into your television. Now, the machine's hardware and software can be emulated and run on a portable USB flash drive, giving you an NES in your pocket wherever you go.

Instructions

    • 1

Download Jnes (see Resources). This small application emulates the hardware of a Nintendo Entertainment System.

    • 2

Insert your USB flash drive into one of the USB ports of your computer.

    • 3

Make a directory on the USB drive called "NES" and save "Jnes.exe" to this directory.

    • 4

Download ROM files for your emulator. ROM files are the software that simulate NES cartridges. See Resources for a directory of legally available ROM files.

    • 5

Unzip your ROM files to the "NES" directory of your USB flash drive.

    • 6

Launch "Jnes.EXE" from your flash drive.

    • 7

Select "Open ROM" from Jnes' "File" menu.

    • 8

Point Jnes to the ROM files saved in your USB drive's "NES" directory. Double-click the name of the NES game you wish to play and the game will launch.
