How Do I Get N64 Games on Project 64?

If you want to play classic Nintendo 64 games, you still can. Emulators like Project 64 allow you to replicate the Nintendo 64 hardware on your computer. While Nintendo 64 emulation is not as stable as that of simpler machines like the Genesis or Super Nintendo, there are plenty of ROM files you can play with Project 64. Getting ROM files up and running on Project 64 is a straightforward process.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install Project 64 from the site listed in the Resources. Project 64 can be downloaded as a self-extracting install file, so all that is required is to double-click the installer and follow the instructions.

    • 2

Download working ROM files. Some ROM files are distributed for research purposes but the code is unplayable. The easiest way to ensure your ROM files are verified as playable is to go to a site that pre-verifies working ROM files. One such site is provided in the Resources section: working ROMs are marked with a green tick. Save the ROM files to a directory where they will be easy to find.

    • 3

Ready your ROMs for loading. If the ROMs are in a compression format other than the ZIP format, unzip them. Project 64 only recognizes uncompressed or ZIP format ROMs.

    • 4

Open Project 64's "File" menu and click "Choose ROM Directory." Navigate to the directory where your ROMs are saved. Click "Ok."

    • 5

Open the "File" menu in Project 64 and choose "Open ROM." You will be presented with a list of ROM files available for play within your chosen ROM directory. Double-click on the ROM you wish to play and enjoy.
