Original Legend of Zelda Cheats

The Legend of Zelda series, with its first game, "The Legend of Zelda," set the stage for the genre of action-adventure-roleplaying video games. You controlled the hero Link in an overhead view, journeying through the land of Hyrule to collect eight pieces of the shattered Triforce of Courage. "The Legend of Zelda" contained few to no hints about how to proceed, and plenty of enemies. The game also had a few glitches that, if exploited, gave you a better chance of surviving.
  1. Start with Full Health

    • Normally, you start the game with three Heart Containers of life at your disposal. According to GameFAQs, Hyrule has two Faerie Fountains, either of which will trigger a complete refill of your Heart Containers. A glitch in the game's programming allows you to start the game with full health.

Open the Item Menu subscreen. Press "Up" and "A" simultaneously on the controller in the Player 2 port. Select "Save," and the game will return to the title screen. Reload your game file, and all your Heart Containers will be full.

    Control the Whistle

    • After you get the Warp Whistle from the sixth dungeon, you can warp between dungeons. The Whistle takes you to the first dungeon, then the second, then the third, all the way up to the eighth each time you play it. By facing up or right, you cause the next sequence to move forward. By facing left or down you reverse it. You can only use the Whistle once per screen, so don't move out of the path of the tornado.

    Invincibility

    • In "The Legend of Zelda" dungeons, you only take damage if the game registers you as having stepped onto the floor. Stand in the doorway of a room when watching enemy movements before making your own. Any enemy attack, even the magic bolts of disappearing Wizzrobes, will pass through you because the game doesn't register the doorway as part of the room.

    Second Quest

    • Most NES Zelda cheats make the game easier for you. This classic "The Legend of Zelda" code makes the game more challenging. At the title screen when you start a new game, enter your name as "Zelda." This will start you on the second quest. Items and dungeon locations have shifted around the map, and the enemies pose much more of a threat.
