How to Repair a Super Nintendo Game Console

The Super Nintendo Entertainment System, also known as the SNES, was first released by Nintendo of Japan in 1990. This 16-bit console updated the graphics and speed on Nintendo's original NES, and it reached a much wider audience of gamers; titles such as "The Legend of Zelda" and "Super Mario World" expanded on the worlds of the original games. Unfortunately, Nintendo no longer produces the SNES, meaning that the best bet for fixing it is trying on your own.

Instructions

    • 1

Fix problems with the system power. Make sure that you're using a licensed power adapter; off-brand cords are much more likely to flake out. Eject any gaming enhancement devices such as the GameShark code device, which can inhibit normal startup. Double check that the power cord is fully plugged in to the outlet, and that your outlet is indeed working. Ensure that the Power slider is in the "On" position.

Adjust system settings to fix audio problems. Press hard on the Game Pak (the cartridge) to make sure that it's fully inserted; a half-connected game can result in failures in the sound system. Remove the AV plugs and then plug them back in, making sure to push them all the way in with a twisting motion: if you've done this correctly you'll feel it click in. Verify that the sound errors are being caused by the SNES and not your television by adjusting the volume manually on your TV.

Repair any problems that cause a blank screen to appear during gameplay or upon startup. Verify that each component is fully plugged in and that your SNES is indeed plugged in to a power source. Disconnect any unlicensed products from the Super Nintendo; some models can detect unofficial accessories and cheat packs and will fail to load correctly when these items are inserted. To avoid blank screens in the future, insert the Game Pak prior to powering on the SNES; failing to do so is one of the most common causes of blank screens.
