Test Drive: Eve of Destruction
Though the Test Drive franchise is better known for their newer racing games, back in the days of the original Xbox they defined a new type of circle track racing, in the dirt. This gem provides hours and hours of entertainment for up to four players.
The campaign mode has you racing fully customizable junkyard scrap cars, and taking them on the road, competing in a number of events from city to city. Aside from normal racing, you can race anything from a school bus race, trailer race, demolition derby, figure 8, figure 8 jump race, trailer race, red rover and many, many more. The only downside to this videogame is that there isn̵7;t a sequel yet.
FlatOut
FlatOut is a car racing video game franchise developed by Bugbear Entertainment, with multiple games and sequels on several different platforms including PC, Xbox, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 2. Though FlatOut games take to the streets as well, they always veer off road on dirt tracks where the majority of the game is played.
The game offers several custom vehicles (the later games include trucks as well), enabling you to smash through fences, signs and windows to boost your speed and take out opponents. It is sure to be a favorite.
Sega Rally
Sega Racing Studio has been a franchise since the mid 90̵7;s, bringing you years of rally driving, dirt track excitement from the arcade to the next gen consoles. The newest edition, Sega Rally Revo for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, offers over 30 different vehicles in three classes. All the vehicles can be driven on over 16 different tracks, some of which can be driven forwards, backwards, and at different times of day.
Rally Cross
If you are fortunate enough to own a copy of Rally Cross for the original PlayStation, you can attest to the greatness of Sony̵7;s first rally game. This game proves, over 10 years later, that playability and fun are more important to a racing game than cutting edge graphics. This game is challenging without being overly frustrating, even allowing you to flip your capsized vehicle back over with the ̶0;L̶1; and ̶0;R̶1; buttons.
Dirt
As the sixth game in the Colin McRae series, Dirt is considered the most popular. It was voted the most likely game that players would continue to play the following year in 2007/2008.
Like Sega Rally, Dirt is a new wave rally driving experience with 46 different cars with unlockable skins for each one. Your car sustains damage which can be repaired between races, though it gets more difficult as the game progresses and you are limited in the number of hours you can put toward repairs. The franchise recently release Dirt 2 in September 2009, which promises to be equally successful.
