Sega Genesis War Games

The Sega Genesis was home to some of the most recognizable war-centric action games and franchises (some of which still continue on today). These games are generally remembered as some of the hardest games around. Games like "Contra" and "Vectorman" would spawn a seemingly endless number of copycat games to follow on the Sega Genesis.
  1. Gunstar Heroes

    • "Gunstar Heroes" is a traditional 2D side scroller. While the narrative differs between the American and Japanese version, the game play remains the same: Make your way to the end of the level while destroying enemies using one of four weapons. A unique feature to "Gunstar Heroes" is the ability to combine certain weapons to create new weapons or give old weapons new abilities. For many, "Gunstar Heroes" is remembered for its insanely difficult (yet rewarding) boss encounters.

    Contra: Hard Corps

    • As a follow-up to the Super Nintendo's "Contra 3," "Contra: Hard Corps" provides more of the same frantic single-player and cooperative game play. The general objective of all Contra games is simple: Collect a lot of weapons, dodge a barrage of nonstop enemy fire and, most importantly, don't die. New to "Hard Corps" is the ability to slide under obstacles and enemy fire, as well as utilize up to four power-ups simultaneously.

    Vectorman

    • "Vectorman" is one of the few series on the Sega Genesis to use pre-rendered 3D characters and backgrounds. However, "Vectorman" played like most 2D side scrollers. Patience and timing are the key to getting past some of the game's more frenzied environments. The personal arsenal of Vectorman includes weapons such as pulse beam, bombs and unnamed automatic machine guns. Vectorman is also able to transform into a number of objects (for example, a drill in "Vectorman 1" and a rhino in "Vectorman 2") to help him get past certain areas or defeat enemies.

    Rambo 3

    • Following a similar plot to the third Rambo movie, "Rambo 3" gives the player control over John Rambo as he fights and blast his way through a soviet invasion. However, unlike the film, the player is restricted to Rambo's fist as his only weapon in the earlier parts of the game. There is also a bit more dialog (incoherent at times) than you would expect in an action game. Fortunately, the action inevitably picks up after the player rescues the colonel and gains access to submachine guns, AK40-7s, a rocket launcher, and even Rambo's patented bow and arrow.
