How to Play Atari Super Breakout

Atari Super Breakout is a game that dates all the way back to the Atari 2600 days, and all the way forward to the age of iPhone apps. Atari Super Breakout can be played plugged into your television, on your web browser, or on the go, but the goal remains the same: Move your pad to stop the ball falling off the screen and bust the colored blocks. Whichever version you wish to play, it's easy to get started and pick up the basics of the game.

The original Super Breakout is playable on the Atari 2600. Dig out your Atari 2600 and dust off the Super Breakout cartridge. The aim of Super Breakout is simple: use the Fire button to launch a small ball, then use your joystick to move the small pad at the bottom of the screen. The ball will bounce between your pad and a battery of blocks: the aim is to bounce the ball into these blocks without allowing the ball to fall off the screen. The level has been won when the blocks have all been hit by the ball, causing them to disappear.

Try the game in a browser. If you do not want to find an Atari 2600 to play Super Breakout on, there are online sites where the game can be played. One such site is listed in the Resources section. Here, the mouse button is used to launch the ball, and the mouse itself is used to move the pad and catch the ball. But the aim remains the same: destroy the blocks with the ball and don't let the ball miss the pad! Note that the part of the pad that the ball bounces off affects the angle of the bounce. Try to catch the ball in dead center of the pad for a clean angle that will be easy to catch when the ball comes back down.

Install the game for iPhone. Atari now manufacture a version of Super Breakout as an iPhone app. This app can be purchased from the Atari site in the Resources section. Here the iPhone's tilt function is used to change the angle of the ball's bounce. While a straight vertical bounce is easier to manage, when blocks get scarce, you'll need to tilt your iPhone to get the angle just right and reach the last few blocks.
