How to Play NES Arcade Games for Windows Vista

Believe it or not, it is entirely possible to run Nintendo Entertainment System games in Windows Vista despite the incredible difference between the two in both hardware and software. What is needed is emulation software---a program that tricks the NES games into thinking that they are running on an actual Nintendo system. Such software is freely available online---you can be up and running your favorite NES games in only a couple minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Windows Vista
  • Internet access
  • NES ROMs
  • NES controllers (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Download FCEUX, a free and open-source NES emulator for modern operating systems (see References below). Install it on your Vista computer.

    • 2

Run FCEUX. Open the "Config" menu to set up the controllers, if you have any, and adjust the video size. Set the X and Y size multipliers to "2" in the "Video..." window to increase the size of the screen. If you don't have any controllers, you can use your computer's keyboard, using the "S," "D," "F," "Enter" and arrow keys to play.

Click on "File" and then "Open ROM..." to run a ROM file from your hard drive---an NES game itself in ZIP format.
