How to Play Original Release Sonic in Debug Mode

Sonic the Hedgehog was a platform-style video game released in 1991 for the Sega Genesis game system. After playing the game so many times, you may want to try something new to freshen your experience. Try Debug Mode, in which you can break rules to make make invisible barriers visible, move objects around on the screen and insert or delete characters.

Instructions

    • 1

      Turn on the game and press "Up," "C," "Down," "C," "Left," "C," "Right" on the controller when the title screen appears.

      Press "Start" and hold the "A" button until you see Sonic onscreen.

      Look for two rows of coded numbers in the top left corner of the screen to confirm that you are in Debug Mode.

    • 4

      Press "B" to select a sprite and then "C" to place the sprite on the screen.
