CoD4 Map Making Tutorial

Call of Duty 4 can be considered of the most popular video games of all time. CoD 4 has taken this series to the next level by allowing players to make their very own multiplayer maps.
  1. Get Started

    • First off, go to a CoD files website and download the file Call of Duty Filefront. This may also be called COD Radiant--this is the name of the map-making software. Next, install it by going to the CoDtools.exe file. When you are done with the install, set up your folder for making your own maps at callofduty/main/maps folder.

    Set your Preferences

    • Once downloaded, you can get started making maps. Open up the editor and it will ask for the cod.qu3 file; this is in the tools\\bin. Then, go to the \"file\" button and then to \"preferences.\" Here you will have the option to choose the layout. There are four different layouts--play with them and decide which one you like best. Make sure that the texture tools boxes are unchecked; this will give you a very important toolbar in the editor. The last preference to set is to have your map save every few minutes so that you do not lose your work. These are the main preferences to set, but you can set any of the others according to your style.

    Make a Map

    • The best way to get started is to start out with a little box. Open a new file and make a box for your floor. After you have placed the floor, find a texture for it. Go to the window at the lower right and find a texture that you like. The textures in the game come in groups; after you have found one, you can hit the Ctrl+Tab to auto configure your floor to a game-standard height and width. Then, place the floor down by pushing the space bar. When it is down, you can delete it by hitting the delete key.

Move to the wall of the box. Draw out the wall that you want, texture it as you did the floor and place it where you want. Save it as a template to use for the other three sides of the box. This will save you some time making the walls. Then, make a ceiling, texture it and put it on the box. Finally, set some lighting for your box--right-click on the main window and select the light option. This will give you a beam of light to place on your map.
