Hints for Legend of Zelda

Released in July of 1987, Nintendo's landmark epic quest for the NES, "The Legend of Zelda," is the first game in one of the company's biggest franchises. Whether it's your first time playing or the thousandth time you've slain the evil Ganon, there are several things about the game that can make your experience more fun and interesting.
  1. Escape the Lost Woods

    • The Lost Woods, located on the bottom left corner of the world map, can be terribly confusing. Unless you take the proper route, you'll see the same screen over and over again, leading nowhere. To find your way through the Lost Woods, travel up, left, down and left. This will take you to the graveyard, making for a great shortcut.

    Defeat Ganon

    • Before you fight the evil Ganon, make sure you have full health, the ring to reduce damage you receive and the potion of life. It is also recommended that you find as many heart containers as possible--there are 16 in all. This will make the final battle much easier.

Fighting Ganon can be tricky. To beat him, you need the silver arrows in your inventory. Avoid the fireballs he tosses at you and stand in the bottom-right corner of the room. Swing your sword wildly and you will eventually hit him. Do this until Ganon turns red. When he does, this is your chance to shoot him with a silver arrow, killing him and allowing you to rescue the princess.

    Unlock the Second Quest

    • Along with the regular game, there is a second quest in "The Legend of Zelda." You can play the second quest by completing the first and defeating Ganon.

While the second quest contains all of the same items and enemies found in the first quest, the locations of these items and maps are different. This keeps the game fresh, so you don't have to play the same quest over and over again.

If you want to skip right to the second quest without beating the first one, enter your name as "ZELDA" when you start a new game. When you start playing, you will be playing the second quest.
