Error Messages
When you plug in your controller to your Nintendo 64 console with a game ready, you may see a message that says, "No Controller Detected." You first need to thoroughly check your connection and make sure that the plug is connected all the way into the input of the console. If there seems to be bent prongs in the plug, you can try adjusting the prongs with your fingers to make them straight again. If a prong in the plug is broken, then your only option will be to send your control into Nintendo for repair. Make sure that there are no foreign products being used with your controller or console. Always try using another controller in the same controller slot on the console. If the same problems or errors occur with a different controller, then there could be problems with your console. Try to troubleshoot as much as you can before deciding to send your controller in to be repaired or before ordering replacement parts.
Joystick Issues
If you're experiencing problems with characters not moving in your N64 games, then it's most likely that your joystick has malfunctioned. A cause could be that the joystick was not placed in the neutral position when starting a game. Turn off the console and make sure the joystick is placed in the center. If it sticks to one particular side, you may need to clean the controller so that it'll remain in the center, neutral position. Turn your game back on with the controller plugged in and then press the "L," "R" and "Start" buttons at the same time. This will help sync your joystick with the game. Try moving your character around in the game. If you are still experiencing problems with the joystick, then you should try cleaning to fix the problem before sending the controller in for repair.
Cleaning Procedures
One of the most simple and beneficial solutions to fixing problems with an N64 controller is to properly clean it. You first must make sure that the controller is unplugged from the console. Get a clean toothbrush and cup of warm water and gently dip the toothbrush into the water. Make sure that the brush isn't too wet. You can then scrub all around the areas of the controller. Make sure to brush particularly well on the buttons that are sticking the most. For example, if you're experiencing issues with the joystick, you should make sure to brush all around the ball the moves the joystick. Dry the wet areas you clean with a paper towel. Let the controller dry and then test it to see if you've fixed the problems you were experiencing. If you still have problems with your controller, find retailers for parts from the Nintendo website (see Resources). The online store will typically have you send the controller for repair as it's not recommended to perform these repairs on your own.
