History
The Nintendo Entertainment System, or NES, was released in the United States on October 18, 1985. The original system was packaged with two controllers and, depending on the model, a specific game like Super Mario Bros. or Duck Hunt. Later versions of the system were sold with Super Mario Bros. 3.
Games
Two of the most popular system games are Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 3. Both of the games feature Nintendo's mascot, Mario, in a side-scrolling adventure. Other popular Nintendo games include Bubble Bobble and Zelda.
Controllers
The original Nintendo controller features a rectangular design with an "A" button, a "B" button, a D-pad, a "Select" button and a "Start" button. The controllers plug into the front of the system. Other controllers include the Nintendo gun and the Power Glove.
Sales
The NES sold tremendously well when it was released. The system has sold over 60 million units, and the top selling game was Super Mario Bros. 3 with more than 18 million copies sold.
Considerations
Classic NES games can be purchased using the Wii Store on a Nintendo Wii. Many of the NES roms can also be played on various websites, including VirtualNES.com. The Nintendo DS also sells classic NES games available in multigame sets.
