History
Mortal Kombat was originally released in 1992. The first series of the game received an M (Mature Rating) rating for its extreme violence. The original game featured characters like Sub-Zero, Scorpion and Liu Kang.
Function
The purpose of the game was to compete in head to head "Death Matches." Players are supposed to drain their opponent's meters, using combinations of fighting moves and special powers.
Significance
The game used sprites to make the characters look real. This made the violence more realistic and far apart from animation counterparts like the "Street Fighter" series. Despite enormous debate about is level of violence, "Mortal Kombat" remained one of the most successful games of all time.
Movies
The game spawned two movies, "Mortal Kombat" in 1995, and "Mortal Kombat: Annihilation" in 1997. The movies featured some of the game's most popular characters in storylines that developed between the fighting scenes.
Game Sequels
The original release spawned sequels entitled "Mortal Kombat II," "Mortal Kombat 3," "Mortal Kombat 4," "Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance," "Mortal Kombat: Deception," "Mortal Kombat: Armageddon," and "Mortal Kombat vs. The DC Universe."
