How to Replace an Xbox DVD Drive

The original Xbox gaming counsel has long been a favorite among gamers. However, like all electronic products, it wears out, and the DVD drive is usually the first thing to go. But instead of buying a whole new system, one can simply replace the existing DVD drive with a new one.

Things You'll Need

  • Replacement DVD drive
  • Torx 20 screwdriver
  • Torx 10 screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

      Turn the Xbox upside down.

      Remove the six torx 20 screws (there is one under each rubber foot and one under each sticker).

      Turn the Xbox back to right side up.

      Pull the top of the case off. Some wiggling may be required.

      Disconnect all cables connected to the DVD drive.

      Remove the four torx 10 screws from around the DVD drive. There are two on the front side of the drive and two in between the DVD and hard drive.

      Lift the DVD drive and its gray cradle out of the case.

      Find the two clips holding the cradle to the DVD drive, and unclip them.

      Replace the old DVD drive with the New DVD drive.

      Reclip the cradle to the new drive.

      Place the new drive back into the case.

      Insert the screws back in their places, holding down the gray cradle.

    • 13

      Reconnect the cable to the new drive, and close the case.

    • 14

      Insert the six torx 20 screws back into their places.
