How to Clean N64 Controllers

As your N64 ages, you might notice some grime and gunk building up on the controllers. While in most cases the staining is harmless, if your controller has been coated with crumbs or sticky fingerprints, you may want to take some time to clean up the surface of the controller. You'll need to be careful when removing the grime, as cleaning methods that use moisture could damage your controller. With a few simple steps, you can easily remove years of accumulated stains and grime from your controllers.

Things You'll Need

Cleaning putty, such as Cyber Clean
Dry sponges or sponge with textured surface pads
Q-tips

  Scrub the controller with a dry sponge to loosen surface stains or dirt on your controller. You may want to try using a sponge with a textured scrubbing surface for older stains. Avoid the use of water or other liquid cleaners, as they could damage the circuitry of the controller.

  Use a Q-tip to loosen grime from hard-to-reach areas, such as the joystick area.

  Apply a cleaning putty to the controller. One great product is Cyber Clean Electronics Cleaning Putty. Simply press the product into the crevices of the controller, then remove the putty. The grime will stick to the putty and your controller will look much better.
