How to Configure a Controller With ZSNES

Playing classic Snes games with the Zsnes emulator is a lot of fun. But you can make the classic gaming experience even better by configuring a controller to play with instead of using your computer's keyboard.

Things You'll Need

  • PC or Intel-based Mac
  • USB controller with at least 12 programmable buttons
  • Zsnes

Instructions

    • 1

Plug in your USB controller to a USB port on your computer. Remember to turn it on. Many USB controllers have buttons or switches to activate them once connected to a power source.

    • 2

Open Zsnes. You should get the window with the purple background and the snow falling.

    • 3

Click "Configure" from the tabs at the top of the window.

    • 4

Click "Devices" from the scroll down menu. It will open a new window within the Zsnes window.

    • 5

Under "Port 1" click "Game Pad." You have now selected to play Zsnes with a controller. Close the window.

    • 6

      Click "Configure" again.

    • 7

Click "Input" from the scroll-down menu. Another new window will open.

    • 8

      Under "Device" choose "Keyboard/Gamepad."

    • 9

Pick up your controller. Under "Keys," there are a number of direction commands like "Up," "Down," "Right," "Left" and so on. They correspond to the Snes original controller settings.

    • 10

To program your controller, click the space next to the name of the button. Then press the button on your controller. The space will change. For instance: "Down J02." Click every command and press what button you want to correspond to that command. You can configure up to 5 controllers for Zsnes.

    • 11

Close the window. Load a game and try it out. All of your buttons should now correspond perfectly with the commands, just like a classic Snes controller.
