How to Win the Fishing Mini-Game in Breath of Fire 2

There are several mini-games in the Super Nintendo role-playing game Breath of Fire 2 that offer fun diversions from the main storyline of the game and can even yield special equipment that can't be found anywhere else. The fishing game can be incredibly frustrating without guidance, as it doesn't clearly explain which fish are attracted by which lures.

Instructions

  Fight in random battles until you gain enough coins to purchase the Deluxe Rod from any item store that sells fishing equipment.

  Purchase the correct bait for the type of fish you will be trying to catch. The small blue sardine, large blue mackerel and purple unagi can all be caught with a standard worm. The striped orange tuna and minnow can be caught with an urchin lure, and the pink snapper can be caught with a shrimp lure. The most expensive bait, a gold bar, can be used to catch the half human, half fish creatures.

  Equip the fishing rod on the main character's accessory slot and go into any of the fishing holes found on the world map.

  Cast the reel out so that it is just past any fish on the top or middle of the river, or well past any fish at the bottom of the river.

  Reel the line in quickly past the fish to attract it's attention. If it doesn't bite, immediately start over. Drag the fish in with quick smooth pulls, only pressing the action button a few times, or the line will break and the fish will escape.
