Play through the game until you have acquired the time traveling ship called the Epoch and it has been outfitted with wings so that it can fly.
Take the Epoch to the year 600 A.D. and fly to the town called Choras. Enter the cafe and speak with the explorer Toma, who will tell you about an item called the Rainbow Shell and then give you a can of soda pop.
Leave the cafe and use the Epoch to travel to the year 1,000 A.D. Go to the place north of Choras called "West Cape" and pour the soda pop on Toma's grave. The ghost of Toma will appear and give the party directions to find the Rainbow Shell.
Return to the year 600 A.D. and go to the island using Toma's directions. It should be just a short distance to the north and then west of where Toma's grave will be in the future. Land on the island and enter the cave there.
Travel through the cave, fighting the various monsters there until you reach the end and fight the boss called Rust Tyrano. Behind the Rust Tyrano is the Rainbow Shell, but unfortunately it is too heavy for the group to carry on their own.
Go to Guardia Castle and speak with the king, who will send men to retrieve the Rainbow Shell.
Board the Epoch again and travel to the year 1,000 A.D. Go to Guardia Castle, where you will find that the present day king is being put on trial for trying to get rid of the Rainbow Shell, which has become a national treasure.
Play through the courtroom scene until the group is able to move around freely. Make your way through the castle to find that the Rainbow Shell is still there in one of the rooms. Examine it to receive a "Prism Shard" item, which you will use later.
Present the proof of the Rainbow Shell still being at the castle to the court. The Chancellor will then transform into a monster and attack the party. Defeat him in combat, and then go speak with the sword smith Melchior, who has come to the castle. He will take the Prism Shard and offer to turn it into a piece of armor called the "Prism Dress."
