How to Acquire Magus as a Playable Character in Chrono Trigger

Although the wizard Magus is the main villain for almost the first half of the game Chrono Trigger, he eventually finds that he and your party have a common enemy, and will join the group as a playable character if you follow these steps.

Things You'll Need

Chrono Trigger game (SNES or PS1 version)

Instructions

  Play through the majority of the game until Chrono has been killed by Lavos; the time-traveling ship Epoch is outfitted with wings; and Dalton's ship, the Blackbird, has been destroyed.

  Go to the year 12,000 B.C. and locate the area called "The Commons."

  Travel to the north and then west of The Commons until you see a place called the "North Cape." Enter the North Cape and go to the northernmost point in the area.

  Locate the blue dot that looks like a power tab; with a character next to it, press the action button on your controller.

  Watch a short scene in which Magus appears and has a conversation with the party. At the end of it, you will have the option to fight Magus or leave him alone. Elect to leave, and walk south as though you are going to leave the area. Before you reach the exit, Magus will chase after the party and join you permanently as a playable character.
