How to Win the Last Level in Bubble Bobble

Many gamers from the 80's remember the frustration of trying to get through all 100 levels of Bubble Bobble for the NES, and with the game's release on the Nintendo Wii's Virtual Console an entirely new generation can learn just how challenging such a simple-seeming game can be. If you've never made it to the "real" final level and faced off with a friend against the final boss to save your dinosaur sweethearts then this guide will tell you exactly what you'll need to do in order to get there and overcome the final challenge.

Start at level 99 to beat the final level. A crystal ball will appear briefly, and if you touch it then a secret door will open. You need to make it to the secret door before it disappears, as it is the door to the actual final level of the game. If you don't grab the crystal ball or make it through the door then you won't go to the real final stage and won't get to see the "good" ending when you beat the game.

When you do finally make your way to the final stage of the game, you're going to need to be quick. A large monster known as Super Drunk is sitting in the middle of the stage, and you have a very limited amount of time before he starts moving. While he is motionless you will need to jump on the very small ledges that are present in the stage to grab the potion that's at the top of the screen. There are two potions, so if you are playing with a friend (which is recommended, as the boss is quite difficult to beat on your own) you won't have to fight over who gets the potion.

The potion turns all of your bubbles into lightning bubbles, and that is what you're going to use to fight the final boss. When he starts moving he will be bouncing around the screen, throwing numerous bottles that you will have to dodge. Your tactic here should be to blow as many bubbles as you can up against one wall, jump up to set them all off in an attempt to hit the boss with as many lightning bolts as you can, then run to the other side and repeat the same thing on the other wall. You've got to keep moving or you'll be hit with one of the bottles or by the boss himself.

In the standard Bubble Bobble mode, it takes 60 hits from lightning bolts to beat the boss... when you beat him and play through the game again in Super Bubble Bobble mode it will take 80. Try to keep both players alive through the battle, even if it requires donating lives... if you beat the game without both players, a message will appear telling you that to get the best ending you need to play it with another player.

When you finally land enough lightning bolts to beat the final boss, he will become encased in a giant bubble. From this point on you merely need to watch the ending sequence and the credits, and if it's your first time beating the game you will have the harder Super Bubble Bobble mode to look forward to.
