Find a couple of surf servers and join briefly just so that you can download the map. The most played surf map seems to be "Surf BuckWild." It is also an ideal surf map to learn on.
Select “Create Server” on your main menu to start a LAN game. Go to the map selection section and scroll down to one of the downloaded surf maps. For the purposes of this article, we will use " surf_buck-wild." Do not include bots and also make sure your "GAME" tab is similar to this one in the image, with the same options.
Click on "Start." Pick a team--any team. It does not matter which one. Choose the setting in the surf server that will let you surf properly without constantly falling (every server has this setting). Enable the console to set this setting. Here's how: Hit the "~" (the tilde) key to bring down the console. If the console is not enabled, go to "Options," click on the "Keyboard" tab and then the "Advanced" button. Check the box that’s next to "Enable Developer Console (~)."
Enter these commands into the console: Sv_airaccelerate 99 and Sv_acceletrate 99. Keep in mind that you will always get more speed if you surf with your knife out. You are now ready to go own your first first ramp.
Keep this in mind: Use only your A and D keys to surf. Never press W while surfing, and never try to go forward.
To surf in a straight line, your need to keep your cross hair straight in front of you, never looking to the left or the right.
Use the "D" key to strafe on a ramp, if that ramp is slanted downward toward the left of your character; use the "A" key to strafe on a ramp, if that ramp is slanted downward toward the right of your character. In other words, you must strafe on the ramp using the key that is opposite to the direction the ramp is pointed in.
Pick up speed as you transfer from ramp to ramp. To pick up speed, begin at the top of a slanted ramp, an then move slowly to the bottom of the ramp using slow steady movement of the mouse. Once you get to the end of the ramp, quickly flick your mouse to the top of the ramp, which will launch you into the air in the direction of the next ramp. Do not press any keys while you are in the air. However, as soon as you get to the side of the next slanted ramp, hold down the appropriate keys.
