How to Fix N64 Games

The Nintendo64 is one of the last gaming stations that uses cartridge games. While the games are durable, the exposed cartridge can accumulate dirt and even oxidize, rendering your N64 games useless. Fortunately, it's a simple repair to bring your favorite games back to life.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour either a small amount of glass cleaner or rubbing alcohol into a bowl. If you are using rubbing alcohol, dilute it with water so your mixture is half and half.

    • 2

Dampen a cotton swab with the glass cleaner or rubbing alcohol mixture. The swab should not have liquid dripping off of it. If it does, throw it away and start with a new one.

    • 3

Grasp the Nintendo64 game firmly in one hand. Rub the cotton swab along both sides of the connector inside the game, applying gentle pressure.

    • 4

Clean the cartridge until the cotton swab tip turns brown or black. Throw the dirty swab away and dampen a new one with the cleaning mixture. Continue cleaning the cartridge until the swab tip comes away clean, replacing cotton swabs as necessary.

    • 5

Set the game on its side and allow it to dry for 5 minutes.

    • 6

Test the game in your Nintendo64 console. If it still doesn't play, deep cleaning is needed.

    • 7

Order a Nintendo64 game cleaning kit. Use the hard abrasive card cleaner inside the kit to clean the game's internal pin connector. If your game still doesn't work, there is likely internal damage that can't be repaired.
