Pay attention to the clock. Pitfall gives you twenty minutes to complete your path through the jungle. Because of this, you have to utilize underground tunnels, each of which is equivalent to three above ground scenes of the game. Be careful in these tunnels, though, since they contain other perils such as deadly animals.
Keep in mind that you can run right and left. Unlike most sidescroll games, you can run in both directions in order to accomplish your task. Right is the default direction which many people find more intuitive than left. Running left, however, offers a distinct advantage: in that direction you run with the dangerous rolling logs, instead of against them.
Take the short cuts. One of the first and most advantageous short cuts is the ladder that appears thirteen scenes (each frame you pass is a "scene") after the beginning. This ladder will take you to Scene 19, saving you six perilous and time consuming scenes.
Beware of the crocodiles. Crocodiles are your worst enemy in Pitfall so knowing how to deal with them is critical to finishing the game. Run to the edge of the crocodile pond and wait for the crocodiles to start closing their mouths. As they do so, jump on the first crocodile and wait for the next time the other two crocs close their jaws. Repeat until you get to the other side. This tip will go a long way in helping you finish the game.
