How to Set Up Minecraft Multi-player Using Hamachi

To use the multiplayer ability of your Minecraft server, you need to provide your personal IP address to the other players or use a virtual private network service to generate one. By using a VPN, you can eliminate the security vulnerabilities -- such as someone attempting to hack your network -- associated with giving out your IP address. LogMeIn Hamachi is one such service and the basic version is free. Once LogMeIn Hamachi is installed, you'll need to change a few settings in your Minecraft server configuration file.

Instructions

    • 1

Browse to the LogMeIn Hamachi download page (link in Resources). Read the "Conditions of Use" statement, tick the check box, and then click "Download Now" under the "Unmanaged" option.

    • 2

Double-click the LogMeIn Hamachi installation file once it has downloaded to run the installer. Follow the prompts to complete the installation and set up your virtual network. Once the installation is complete, open the LogMeIn Hamachi program if it doesn't open automatically.

    • 3

Open the "server.properties" file from your Minecraft server's root folder in a text editor such as Notepad. Copy and paste the IP address at the top of the LogMeIn Hamachi program window -- this is your virtual IP address -- at the end of the line containing "server-ip=". The resulting line should look like the following but with your IP address:

      server-ip=123.456.7.89

Provide the virtual IP address from LogMeIn Hamachi to the people you want to allow to connect to your Minecraft server. To connect to your server, open the Minecraft game, click "Multiplayer," click "Direct Connect," type the IP address into the applicable field (or type "localhost" if you're playing on the same computer the server is running on), and then click "Connect."
